Chapter 15

Addie picked up the throw blanket from the back of the sofa, draped it over Serena, and smiled down at her softly snoring friend. She could remember the time when girls’ nights were spent drinking a whole bottle of wine, and talking until the wee hours of the morning. My, my, how things have changed. As she settled into the far end of the sofa, she eyed Serena’s still half-full glass of wine and chuckled softly. She took a sip of her tea and opened the journal Serena had been reading from.

Her thought was that if she went back and filled in some of the gaps Serena had skipped over when she raced to the bullet points, it might give her a clue about who was responsible for David’s death and more information about Anita’s revelation that they were going to be parents.

She read through page after page; all she took away from it was how much her aunt had loved him, their plans for their upcoming Christmas wedding, how much help Maisie was to her in helping make the arrangements. There was even mention of her old friend Beatrice, from Greyborne Harbor, and how she had pulled strings with her father at the Greyborne Harbor Daily News to get him to print the wedding invitations. Anita also mentioned how giddy her father was with the fact that his daughter was marrying a Winthrop of Boston. But, in all that, Addie couldn’t find even one clue as to who would have wanted David dead, and the last entry in the journal left her with more questions than answers.
